SBS Roofing Systems
Initially, all BUR (built-up Roofing) consisted of coal tar pitch; however, due to health and safety concerns for the people who installed coal tar pitch, there was a need to change to a different type of roofing system. Asphalt BUR was born and worked fine over rigid substrates before the practice of installing HVAC equipment on top of the roof surfaces. Later, the industry began adding insulation under the roof, and the use of metal (flexural) decking caused problems for the rigid asphalt BUR roofing system. The Europeans were the first to tackle the problem by mixing flexible modifiers into the bitumen. This process made the bitumen take on the properties of the modifiers, thereby creating more flexible roofing system.
Modified bitumen roofing systems consist of a minimum of two plies of reinforced modified bitumen sheets. The sheets are usually installed by using hot bitumen or cold process adhesive, or they may be torch applied.
In the late 1970's, modified bitumen roofing systems made a jump from Europe to the United States. In 1980, Lundin Roofing Company's founder, Ed Lundin, installed one of the first modified roofing systems in the area on the old coliseum at Southeastern University. At that time, modified bitumen was so new to the United States that the rolls were manufactured in Europe and shipped to Louisiana.
